Ethereum Foundation Introduces Clear Signing Standard for Safer Transactions
The Ethereum Foundation has introduced Clear Signing, an open standard intended to improve user safety by making blockchain transactions easily readable and understandable. This move seeks to reduce risks seen in past security breaches caused by users approving unclear transactions.

The Ethereum Foundation has officially launched Clear Signing, a new open standard intended to replace the complex, unreadable hexadecimal data often shown to users during blockchain transactions. This standard aims to make crypto operations more transparent by providing plain-language summaries before a user approves any transaction.
Clear Signing is underpinned by two new Ethereum protocols: ERC-7730, which defines a JSON descriptor format allowing smart contracts to describe their functions in readable text, and ERC-8176, which provides a cryptographic attestation system. Together, these protocols enable wallet interfaces to pull independently verified summaries of transaction details, giving users a clearer understanding of what they are authorizing.
The initiative has the support of several key industry players, including Ledger, Trezor, MetaMask, WalletConnect, and others. Infrastructure stewardship is managed by the One Trillion Dollar Security Initiative. According to the Foundation, this standard is designed to address one of the most prevalent security vulnerabilities in the ecosystem: so-called 'blind signing,' where users approve transactions without fully understanding their content.
Previous high-profile exploits, such as the $1.5 billion Bybit hack and the WazirX breach, involved attackers exploiting this very weakness. Often, the last step in such breaches is a user inadvertently approving a transaction whose content is obscured by technical data. Clear Signing seeks to mitigate this risk by ensuring wallet holders are accurately informed at the final point of approval.
The Clear Signing framework also includes a registry for descriptor files. Any party can submit transaction descriptors, which are then independently audited and attested to by security professionals. This open, reviewable system aims to improve transparency and trust in transaction approvals across Ethereum-based applications.
While the Foundation and its partners present Clear Signing as a significant step forward for user protection, the effectiveness of this standard will depend on broad adoption by wallet providers and the ongoing diligence of both users and security auditors.
