Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the founder of Binance, has raised the idea of potentially freezing the Bitcoin holdings attributed to Satoshi Nakamoto if future advances in quantum computing threaten the network's security. Discussing the possibility of a "quantum fork"—a scenario where quantum computing could compromise cryptographic protections—CZ emphasized that any decision to take action, such as freezing these dormant coins, would need to be made collectively by the Bitcoin community rather than by individuals or companies alone.
Quantum computing is considered a potential risk to current cryptographic methods, which protect assets on networks like Bitcoin. Experts and industry leaders have frequently debated the timeline and impact of quantum breakthroughs, and whether network upgrades may be necessary to protect against such risks.
At present, the Bitcoin community has not reached consensus on contingency measures. CZ’s comments underscore the need for open dialogue and careful consideration rather than unilateral action. It remains unclear what steps, if any, would ultimately be taken should quantum threats become urgent. As of now, Satoshi Nakamoto’s Bitcoin remains untouched and the security risks from quantum computing are theoretical.
