A security issue identified in Coinkite's Coldcard hardware wallet has brought renewed attention to the risks associated with single-device, single-signature Bitcoin storage. The bug, which contributed to notable Bitcoin thefts during July and August 2026, highlighted the potential consequences of generating all security keys from the same hardware source.

In response, Coinkite has updated its Coldcard firmware to require increased randomness in the creation of new wallet seeds, introducing mandatory dice roll and manual key-press entropy during wallet setup. These changes aim to strengthen key generation and reduce the risk of predictability or compromise from device flaws.

Analysts and security advocates suggest that the broader takeaway is not to abandon self-custody of cryptocurrency, but instead to migrate toward multisignature wallet arrangements, ideally with keys produced on devices from different manufacturers.
