Coinbase has announced a reduction of approximately 14% of its staff—impacting around 660 employees out of a total 4,700—according to statements from CEO Brian Armstrong. The announcement, initially communicated internally to employees and later made public, references both current challenges in the cryptocurrency market and a structural transition toward integrating artificial intelligence (AI) at the company's core.
Armstrong described two primary factors behind the move. First, he cited the volatility and downturn in the crypto market, highlighting the need to streamline operational costs and prepare Coinbase for renewed growth when market conditions improve. Second, Armstrong pointed to operational advancements driven by AI technologies, noting that AI-powered workflows have allowed teams to work more efficiently and deploy features more rapidly.
According to Armstrong, Coinbase's restructuring includes three main elements:
- Flattening organizational hierarchies to a maximum of five layers below the CEO and COO, - Eliminating roles focused solely on management, expecting leaders to also actively contribute as individual contributors, - Introducing "AI-native pods," which are small, agile teams or even one-person units responsible for both technical and non-technical outputs, supported by AI automation.
Laid-off US employees will receive a minimum of 16 weeks of base pay, additional pay for years of service, the next scheduled equity vest, and six months of COBRA health coverage. Staff outside the US will receive support packages tailored to local regulations. Armstrong acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, stating the company aimed for transparency and rapid communication throughout the process.
This shift is seen as Coinbase's response to both external market pressures and internal ambitions to become an AI-driven organization. The effectiveness of these measures and the long-term impact on Coinbase's business model remain to be seen.
